Vigil For Victims Of Welfare Reforms In Edinburgh Marks International Day Of Disabled People

Standard

Same Difference

“Victims” of the Tory government’s welfare cuts‘ regime will be commemorated with a candlelight vigil in Edinburgh tomorrow (3 December).

Dozens of people who have either killed themselves or died as an alleged consequence of benefit cuts will be remembered during the event which is being hosted by disability campaign group Black Triangle.

It will take place outside Edinburgh’s St Giles Cathedral at 4pm followed by an event at the City Chambers at 7pm.

On its website, the organisation lists dozens of people from across the UK it alleges have been “killed as a result of welfare reforms.”

Alongside the names it has written in eulogy: “They shall be remembered forevermore.

“Avenge the dead. Resuscitate the living. We must fight on for freedom from Westminster’s murderous policies and support the struggle of all Britain’s sick and/or disabled people simultaneously.”

Statistics released by the Department for Work and Pensions revealed that…

Independent Living Fund (ILF) is history; Now deliver the Care Act for all Disabled People

Derby News

The comprehensive support which he receives is essential to his well-being, his ability to live independently, and the opportunity to pursue his passion for competitive sailing. The continuation of this level of support is underpinned by the Care Act legislation.

“The cuts in (ILF) support that are being handed out to individuals will leave us without dignity, sitting in our own faeces for hours at a time, dependent on the kindness of friends, family, neighbours and even strangers just to eat, drink and move”  (Disabled People Against Cuts)

“The consequences are that some disabled people in receipt of ILF funding will no longer receive any support at all; and others may find their support package reduced. Many local authorities are not engaging with disabled people on what they plan to do causing increasing anxiety to existing ILF…

World Homelessness Day 2014

Pilion Trust's Blog

whd-box-200[1]

10.10.2014 – We ask for everyone around the world to take a moment out their day, troubles, woes, fears etc., and think of the millions of people around the world who are homeless and rough sleeping tonight.

London Homelessness has risen by over 6%. The October rains have arrived and the winter cold is coming. How many people will die this winter on the streets of London?

protest[1]

No matter how hard life seems at the moment, there is still hope as you are not homeless. Escalating house prices, inflated rentals, no council stock, zero Local Authority help and the Government talks about Affordable Housing?

What does that look like in reality?

Fuck The Poor? I Swear You Need To Get Social

Thank you. Peace

Blether And Blogger

An interesting and thought-provoking social experiment from The Pilion Trust got me sitting up taking notice.

I’ll be honest, I’m not aware of The Pilion Trust nor their work, presumably because I now live and work in Scotland. However, because of their #FuckThePoor initiative, I now am. Watch the clip and let me know your thoughts.

[This clip belongs to The Pillion Trust, the link to which I have embedded in my post, and the blog post from which it came I have already reblogged]

Told you, interesting heh? What is equally fascinating is the power of social media. Like I mention, I’m not aware of the work of the Pilion Trust yet I’m happy to share their You Tube clip across Twitter and my blog, not just because I empathise but because it got me thinking. It’s edgy, different, provocative.

I was so eager to draw others’ attention to the clip. So much so, this…
